Questions to Ask a Venue When Booking a Cultural Event in San Diego

April 18, 2025

Planning a cultural celebration—whether it’s a traditional Indian wedding, a vibrant quinceañera, a bar or bat mitzvah, or another meaningful milestone—comes with unique considerations that go far beyond your typical event. Every detail matters, from honoring heritage and religious traditions to ensuring your guests feel welcomed and comfortable.

When booking a venue, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure the space can accommodate your cultural needs. At BRICK in San Diego, we’re proud to host a wide variety of cultural events, and we know flexibility and inclusivity are key.

Here are the most important questions to ask your venue when booking for a cultural event.

Food & Beverage Policies

Food plays a central role in many cultural events. Whether you’re planning a traditional Indian feast, kosher catering, or a multi-course Chinese banquet, make sure the venue’s policies support your culinary vision.

Ask:

  • Does the venue have a food & beverage (F&B) minimum?
  • Can we bring in our own caterer, or must we use in-house vendors?
  • If we use an outside caterer, are there additional fees?
  • Is there a prep kitchen available for use?

At BRICK, we offer complete flexibility with catering—bring in your favorite local vendor, family chef, or specialty cuisine expert. No hidden fees or exclusive contracts here. Plus, our prep kitchen makes it easy for caterers to stay organized and efficient throughout your event.

Vendor Flexibility

From specialty DJs and traditional musicians to cultural decor experts, you may be working with vendors outside the typical wedding or event industry.

Ask:

  • Does the venue have an open vendor policy?
  • Are there restrictions on certain types of vendors (caterers, DJs, decorators, etc.)?
  • If we choose an outside vendor, are there additional fees or a waiver process?

At BRICK, you have the freedom to bring in any vendor you’d like. We believe your event should reflect your vision—not be limited by someone else’s list. As long as they’re insured and follow our basic guidelines, they’re welcome here.

Cultural & Religious Accommodations

Respecting cultural and religious traditions is non-negotiable. Whether your celebration includes a sacred ceremony or vibrant, choreographed performances, your venue should understand and support those elements.

Ask:

  • Can the venue accommodate specific cultural or religious traditions (e.g., fire rituals, candle-lighting ceremonies, choreographed dances)?
  • Are there any restrictions on open flames, incense, or other religious practices?
  • Can the event space be used for both the ceremony and the reception?

BRICK has experience hosting a wide variety of cultural events. We’re happy to work with you on accommodating rituals, from small fire ceremonies to full-procession entrances. We also allow events to flow seamlessly between ceremony and reception in the same space.

Space & Guest Capacity

Many cultural celebrations are large, multi-generational events. Be sure the space fits your guest list—and your event format.

Ask:

  • What is the maximum capacity for seated and standing events?
  • Is there enough space for a dance floor, live music, or performances?
  • Are there private rooms for prayer, dressing, or family moments?

With 6,000 square feet of open, industrial-chic space, BRICK can host up to 220 guests seated or 300+ standing. There’s ample room for dance floors, live bands, staged performances, and more. We also offer flexibility for private setups as needed.

Decor & Customization

Cultural events often include meaningful decor—from colorful drapes and symbolic altars to hanging lanterns and large installations.

Ask:

  • Are there any restrictions on decor (candles, draping, hanging items, confetti, etc.)?
  • Can we bring in cultural elements like mandaps, chuppahs, or themed backdrops?
  • Can we adjust lighting or bring in additional A/V equipment?

At BRICK, you can make the space completely your own. We welcome cultural decor, offer adjustable lighting, and allow third-party A/V equipment. Our neutral brick walls and tall ceilings provide the perfect blank canvas for your vision.

Event Timing & Noise Restrictions

Cultural events don’t always follow a traditional schedule. Whether you’re planning a multi-day celebration or want to dance into the night, your venue should support your timeline.

Ask:

  • How long can the event last?
  • Are there cut-off times for music or loud celebrations?
  • Can we extend the rental period if needed?

BRICK offers full-day rentals, so you can celebrate late into the evening. If you need additional time for set-up or take-down, we’ve got you covered.

Parking & Accessibility

A smooth guest experience starts with easy access. Consider how your attendees—from elderly relatives to large families—will get to and from the venue.

Ask:

  • Is there ample parking for all guests?
  • Are there accessibility options for elderly or disabled guests?
  • Can buses or large vehicles drop off guests nearby?

BRICK is conveniently located in Liberty Station with plenty of parking and ADA accessibility. We can also help coordinate easy drop-off points for buses or shuttles.

Cost & Contract Details

Budget transparency is essential. No one wants surprise fees after the fact—especially when juggling multiple vendors.

Ask:

  • What is included in the rental fee?
  • Are there any hidden fees (cleaning, overtime, security)?
  • What is the cancellation and refund policy?

BRICK offers transparent pricing with no hidden fees. Your rental includes full access to the venue, tables and chairs, a venue manager, and more. Our contract is straightforward and easy to understand, so you can book with confidence.
